Voice Recorder vs Dictaphone: What's the Difference?
A voice recorder captures audio. A dictaphone captures audio AND converts speech to text in real time. Both work in your browser; the dictaphone adds the Web Speech API for live transcription.
Use voice recorder when you only need the audio file (sharing, archive). Use dictaphone when you also want a written transcript (notes, drafts, meeting summaries).

Note: transcription requires Chrome or Edge (which support the Web Speech API). Firefox and Safari can record audio but won't transcribe. The transcript download is a plain .txt file you can edit anywhere.
Audio File Formats: WebM, MP3, WAV Compared
Browser recordings come out as WebM with Opus audio: modern, efficient, small files at good quality. Works in VLC, Chrome, Firefox, and most modern players.
MP3 is older but universally compatible. Convert WebM to MP3 with Audacity (free) or any online converter if you need maximum compatibility.
WAV is uncompressed and huge. Only use for professional audio work where post-processing requires lossless source.
Tips for Clear Voice Recordings
Position the mic 6-10 inches from your mouth, slightly off-axis. Direct-on positioning causes plosives (pop sounds on Ps and Bs).
Record in a quiet room with soft surfaces (carpet, curtains). Hard rooms (kitchens, bathrooms) sound echoey.
Speak at normal volume: not too quiet (forces gain boost which adds noise) and not too loud (causes clipping).
Privacy: Is Your Recording Stored?

Our dictaphone: audio stays local. The transcription step uses your browser's Web Speech API, which on Chrome/Edge sends audio to Google's speech recognition servers for processing. If transcript privacy matters, use the regular voice recorder and transcribe later with a local model.
