Tuning is the first skill every guitarist needs to learn. An out-of-tune guitar makes every chord sound wrong no matter how perfectly you play: and it trains your ear to accept incorrect pitches. This guide covers everything beginners need to know.

Why Tuning Is the Most Important Beginner Skill

Beginners often skip tuning because it feels tedious. The problem: out-of-tune practice builds bad habits. Your brain learns the sound of slightly-off chords as "what chords sound like": and your ear training suffers for years afterward.

Spend the 60 seconds before every practice session tuning up. It pays back enormously in faster progress and better musicianship.

Understanding String Names and Numbers (EADGBe)

A standard 6-string guitar has strings tuned, from lowest (thickest) to highest (thinnest): E, A, D, G, B, E. The bottom E is called the "6th string" (string 6) and the top E is the "1st string" (string 1): counting starts from the highest-pitched string.

Memory aids for the EADGBe order include "Eddie Ate Dynamite, Good Bye Eddie" and "Every Adult Dog Growls, Barks, Eats".

Tuning Methods: By Ear, Clip-on Tuner, Online Tuner

By ear (the 5th fret method): fret the low E at the 5th fret to match the open A string. Adjust A until they match. Continue: A 5th fret = open D, D 5th fret = open G, G 4th fret = open B, B 5th fret = open high e. Requires a reference for the low E (a piano, app, or other instrument).

Clip-on tuners (Snark, D'Addario NS Micro) clip to the headstock and detect vibration directly. Fast, accurate, and unaffected by background noise.

Online tuners use your computer or phone microphone and the Web Audio API. Free, instant, no purchase needed. Best for beginners and for anyone who occasionally tunes at home.

How to Use an Online Guitar Tuner

Allow microphone access when prompted. Pluck a string firmly and let it ring. The tuner identifies the note and shows whether you're sharp or flat. Adjust the tuning peg until the indicator centers.

Always tune up to pitch (tighten the string from below the target) rather than down. Tuning down leaves slack that returns to flat during play. If you overshoot, drop below pitch and tune back up.

Why Your Guitar Keeps Going Out of Tune

Most common: new strings stretching. Fresh strings detune for the first 1-3 hours of play until fully stretched. Pull each string gently away from the fretboard several times after install to speed this up.

Second cause: poor stringing. Only 2-3 wraps around the tuning post is enough; too many or too few cause slipping. The first wrap should be above the string's exit hole, subsequent wraps below: a "locking" pattern.

Third cause: temperature and humidity. Guitars are wood instruments and respond to environmental shifts. A hard case with a humidifier helps.

Acoustic vs Electric Guitar Tuning Differences

The tuning pitches are identical for acoustic and electric. Both use EADGBe. The differences: electric strings are typically lighter gauge (.009-.042) and respond faster, while acoustics use heavier gauges (.012-.054) for more volume and projection.

Electric guitars often have more stable tuning thanks to fixed bridges and tighter machine heads. Acoustics with bridge pins can have minor tuning instability if pins aren't fully seated.

New Strings and Stretch Tuning

When you put on new strings, the strings stretch significantly during the first hour of play. Expect to re-tune every 10-15 minutes during this break-in period.

Speed up break-in by gently pulling each string 1-2 inches away from the body multiple times after install, then re-tune. Repeat until the strings hold tune for 5+ minutes.

When You're Ready: Alternate Tunings

Once standard tuning is comfortable, try Drop D (lower the low E to D). Used in countless modern rock and metal songs. Easy to revert, easy to learn.

Beyond Drop D, explore Open G (used by the Rolling Stones), DADGAD (Celtic and acoustic fingerstyle), and Open D (Joni Mitchell). Each opens new chord shapes and songwriting possibilities.
