How to Tune a Ukulele Online

The standard ukulele tuning is gCEA (high G, then C E A). Soprano and concert ukes use this 'reentrant' tuning where the G is actually higher than the C and E. Tenor ukes often use a low-G variation (GCEA), giving a deeper sound and more melodic range. Baritone ukes are tuned DGBE: the same as the top four strings of a guitar, an octave higher than the guitar's actual pitches.

High-G vs Low-G Tuning

High-G (reentrant) is traditional and produces the characteristic 'plinky' uke sound. The high G string sits in the middle of the chord, creating the unusual voicing that makes ukulele chords sparkle. Low-G tunes the G down an octave, adding bass and making the instrument more guitar-like. Many tenor uke players prefer low-G for solo melodic playing.

Common Ukulele Tuning Issues

Brand new strings stretch dramatically. Expect to re-tune every 10-15 minutes for the first day. After 2-3 days they stabilize. If your uke goes flat repeatedly in the same direction, check that the strings are wound correctly at the tuning pegs: minimum 2 wraps, ideally locked under themselves.

Soprano vs Concert vs Tenor vs Baritone

Soprano (smallest, ~21"): traditional Hawaiian sound, classic plinky tone. Concert (~23"): slightly larger, more volume. Tenor (~26"): full sound, easier for adult fingers. Baritone (~30"): deeper, guitar-like tuning, slower attack. All use the same tuner here: choose your variant from the dropdown.

Tuning Tips for Beginners

Pluck a string near the soundhole, not at the bridge: clearer fundamental for the tuner to detect. Adjust the peg slowly; ukes are sensitive to small turns. If you go too sharp, drop below pitch and tune back up so the string holds.
