A good webcam dramatically improves how you come across on calls and streams. Built-in laptop cameras are usually mediocre: investing $50-150 in a dedicated USB webcam is one of the highest-impact upgrades for anyone who video-chats regularly.
What Makes a Good Webcam?
Three things matter most: sensor quality (low-light performance), frame rate (smoothness), and lens (field of view). Marketing focuses on resolution but a well-built 1080p camera looks far better than a cheap 4K one.
Autofocus, auto-exposure, and color accuracy matter for streamers. Plug-and-play compatibility matters for everyone: avoid webcams that require proprietary driver installs.
Webcam Resolution: 720p vs 1080p vs 4K
720p is the practical baseline. Most laptop cams hit this. Acceptable for any video call.
1080p is the sweet spot. Noticeably sharper, especially when others pin you full-screen. Most USB webcams in the $50-150 range deliver clean 1080p at 30fps.
4K is overkill for video calls. Zoom downscales to 1080p max anyway. 4K is only useful for recording or streaming where the full resolution is preserved.
Best Budget Webcams Under $50
Logitech C270 (~$30): 720p, basic but reliable. Better than most laptop cams. Good if you just need a working camera.
Anker PowerConf C200 (~$45): 2K resolution, auto-focus, surprisingly good sensor for the price.
Best Mid-Range Webcams ($50–$150)
Logitech C920 (~$70): the classic. 1080p, excellent color, plug-and-play. The most-recommended webcam in this range for a decade.
Logitech C922 Pro (~$90): the C920 plus better low-light and background-removal support for streamers.
Razer Kiyo (~$100): built-in ring light makes a real difference in dim rooms. Popular with streamers.
Best 4K Webcams for Creators
Logitech Brio (~$200): 4K30 or 1080p60. HDR, 3 fields of view, and Windows Hello support. The standard for serious creators.
Insta360 Link (~$300): AI tracking, 4K, gimbal-stabilized. Tracks you as you move: useful for active streams.
Opal C1/Tadpole (~$200-300): designed by ex-Apple engineers. Best-in-class image processing.
Test Your Current Webcam First
Before buying, see how your current camera actually performs. Many laptop cameras are surprisingly decent in good lighting: you may not need an upgrade yet.

Webcam vs iPhone as Camera (Continuity Camera)
macOS Ventura+ supports Continuity Camera: your iPhone's rear camera becomes a wireless webcam for your Mac. The iPhone 12 Pro and later have a vastly better sensor than any sub-$300 USB webcam.
Tradeoff: requires a phone mount, the phone drains battery during use, and you can't use the phone for anything else while it's your camera.
Lighting Matters More Than Resolution
A budget webcam in great light beats an expensive webcam in poor light. The cheapest "upgrade" you can make is moving so a window is in front of you (not behind), or buying a $30 ring light.
Avoid backlight: sitting with a bright window behind you turns you into a silhouette. Front lighting (window or lamp facing you) gives the best results with any camera.
