Bass guitar tuning shares fundamentals with regular guitar but has its own challenges: the low fundamentals are below the range of many laptop mics, and the strings settle slower after tuning changes. This guide covers 4-string, 5-string, and Drop D bass.

Standard Bass Guitar Tuning (EADg)

A standard 4-string bass tunes to E1, A1, D2, G2: same notes as a guitar's bottom four strings, but one octave lower. The low E vibrates at just 41.2 Hz.

Verify your bass with our free online tuner. It handles low frequencies that general-purpose tuners struggle with:

How Bass Tuning Differs From Guitar

Bass strings are physically heavier and respond slower to pitch changes. A small tuning adjustment takes 1-2 seconds to settle audibly. Be patient and pluck cleanly with the fingertip: heavy attack causes pitch wobble that confuses tuners.

Bass strings also detune more after big tuning changes because the heavier strings exert more pull on the neck. Always re-check all strings after adjusting any one of them.

5-String Bass Tuning (BEADg)

A 5-string bass adds a low B (30.87 Hz) below the standard E. Some players tune the extra string as a high C instead (EADGC) for a higher melodic range. The 5-string layout is popular in modern rock, metal, gospel, and progressive music.

Detecting the low B requires a good mic: many laptop mics roll off below 50 Hz. Use a USB audio interface and DI box for the cleanest signal.

Drop D and Other Bass Alternate Tunings

Drop D bass (DADG) lowers the low E to D: a 1-finger power chord on the lowest string. Used in heavy rock, metal, and any song where the bass needs to follow a guitar's Drop D riff.

Other alternates: half-step down (Eb Ab Db Gb), full step down (D G C F), and BEADG for 5-string players who want extra low range without retuning.

Why Bass Strings Go Out of Tune Faster

New bass strings stretch for the first 8-10 hours of play. Expect frequent re-tuning until they're broken in. Stretching strings manually (pull each string away from the body 5-10 times after stringing) speeds up break-in.

Temperature and humidity changes affect bass more than guitar because the bigger body exposes more wood to environmental shifts.

Setting Intonation on a Bass Guitar

If your bass plays in tune open but sharp/flat when fretted, intonation needs adjustment. Play the 12th fret harmonic on each string, compare to the 12th fret fretted note. If the fretted note is sharp, move the saddle back. If flat, move it forward.

Bass intonation drifts after string changes, especially gauge changes. Re-check after every fresh restring.
