The ukulele's small size and gentle nylon strings make it one of the easiest instruments to pick up. But the unusual reentrant tuning trips up many beginners: particularly when switching between soprano, concert, tenor, and baritone sizes. This guide explains every ukulele tuning and how to use an online tuner.

Ukulele Tuning Basics

A ukulele has four strings tuned, in standard tuning, to G4-C4-E4-A4. Unlike a guitar, the lowest-pitched string isn't the thickest: the third string (C) is actually the lowest. This is called "reentrant" tuning and gives the ukulele its characteristic bright, plinky sound.

GCEA Tuning Explained

gCEA (lowercase g denotes high-G) is the standard tuning for soprano and concert ukuleles. The pitches are: G4 (392 Hz), C4 (262 Hz), E4 (330 Hz), A4 (440 Hz). The G is the highest of the four open strings, which feels unusual but creates the open-chord ringing tone associated with ukulele music.

Some players prefer "low-G" tuning, especially on tenor ukuleles. Low-G replaces the high G4 with G3: an octave lower, giving the instrument extra bass range and a more guitar-like sound. The other three strings stay the same.

Soprano vs Concert vs Tenor vs Baritone

Soprano (~21" length): the traditional Hawaiian size. Brightest, plinkiest sound. Tuned gCEA.

Concert (~23"): slightly larger, more volume, easier to fret for adult hands. Same gCEA tuning as soprano.

Tenor (~26"): fuller sound, more sustain. Usually tuned gCEA but commonly tuned to low-G GCEA for melodic playing.

Baritone (~30"): tuned DGBE: the same as the bottom four strings of a guitar. If you play guitar, the chord shapes transfer directly.

Using an Online Ukulele Tuner

Select your ukulele size from the tuner dropdown. Allow microphone access. Pluck the G string near the soundhole: the tuner identifies it and shows how far above or below pitch you are. Adjust the tuning peg until the needle centers.

Pluck closer to the soundhole rather than near the bridge for the cleanest fundamental that the tuner can detect. Slowly turn pegs: ukuleles are small and sensitive to small adjustments.

Tuning by Ear

Once you know what gCEA sounds like, you can tune the C, E, and A strings to the G by ear. Use the 5th fret method (similar to guitar): fret the G string at the 5th fret to get C, match it to your open C. Fret your open C at the 4th fret for E, and so on.

Why Ukuleles Go Out of Tune

Nylon strings stretch dramatically when new: expect to re-tune every 10 minutes for the first day, then every 30 minutes for the first week. After 2–3 weeks, strings stabilize and hold tune for full play sessions.

Temperature and humidity also affect ukuleles more than guitars because they're smaller and have less mass. Store your uke in a hard case to minimize environmental changes.

String Replacement

Replace ukulele strings every 6–12 months for daily players. Signs you need new strings: dull tone, won't hold tune even after stretching, visible wear or discoloration. Popular brands: Aquila Nylgut (the most common), Worth Clear, D'Addario Pro-Arté.
