What Is Refresh Rate in Simple Terms?
Refresh rate is how many times per second your screen redraws the image. 60 Hz = 60 redraws per second. The higher the number, the smoother on-screen motion looks.
You see this most clearly when moving your mouse across the screen. On 60 Hz the cursor appears to jump in small increments. On 144 Hz it flows continuously.

60 Hz: standard for most monitors, laptops, and TVs. Fine for office work, web browsing, and movies (which are 24-30 fps anyway).
75 Hz: minor upgrade. Often comes with budget gaming monitors. Slightly smoother than 60 Hz, not transformatively different.
120-144 Hz: the sweet spot. Big jump from 60 Hz that everyone notices. Standard for gaming monitors and recent flagship phones.

Refresh Rate vs Frame Rate: What's the Difference?
Refresh rate is the monitor side: how often the display updates. Frame rate is the GPU side: how many frames per second the game/app is producing.
If frame rate is below refresh rate (e.g., 60 fps on a 144 Hz monitor), the monitor shows duplicate frames. If frame rate exceeds refresh rate, the monitor drops or tears frames.
Variable refresh rate (G-Sync, FreeSync) matches monitor refresh to GPU output dynamically, preventing tearing without input lag.
Does High Refresh Rate Actually Help in Games?
Competitive shooters: yes, meaningfully. Higher Hz means seeing opponents earlier and lower input latency.
Single-player games and casual play: noticeably smoother but not a competitive advantage. Worth it for the feel, not the metrics.
Non-gaming use: smoother scrolling, more responsive cursor. Easy to get used to; hard to go back to 60 Hz after.
How to Enable Your Monitor's Full Refresh Rate
Windows: Settings → System → Display → Advanced display → Refresh rate. Pick the highest available option.
Mac: System Settings → Displays → click the display → Refresh rate. Note: most MacBook built-in displays are limited; external displays support more rates.
For 144 Hz at 1440p, you need DisplayPort 1.2 or HDMI 2.0. Old HDMI 1.4 cables silently cap you at 60 Hz at high resolutions.
