How to Tune a 5-String Banjo Online

Standard banjo tuning is Open G: G4 (5th string, short), D3, G3, B3, D4. The short 5th string is the highest-pitched and doesn't run the full length of the neck: it starts at the 5th fret. Click the string buttons to hear the reference, then tune each string to match.

Open D and Celtic Tunings

Open D (aDF#AD) tunes the banjo to a D major chord across all open strings. Used in old-time, mountain banjo, and some bluegrass songs in D. Celtic tuning (gDGCD) tunes the 4th string up to C, giving a modal sound popular in Irish and Scottish banjo styles.

Banjo Setup Affects Tuning

The drum head tension significantly affects tone and intonation. A tighter head produces a brighter, more cutting tone; a looser head sounds warmer but loses sustain. Adjust gradually: large changes shift all strings out of tune. The bridge position determines intonation. Move the bridge slightly toward or away from the tailpiece to fine-tune octave accuracy.

Common Banjo Tuning Issues

Short 5th string is hard to detect on some mics: pluck firmly. The 5th string capo can affect tuning if installed wrong. New banjo heads stretch: expect retuning every few minutes for the first hours of play after head replacement.

Banjo Style and Tuning

Bluegrass: Open G almost exclusively. Clawhammer/old-time: Open G, but also Double C (gCGCD) and Sawmill (gDGCD). Irish/Celtic: Celtic tuning (gDGCD).
