Android microphone issues are usually app permission problems or background apps holding the mic. This guide walks through every fix in order, starting with the 30-second checks.

Quick Checks First

  • Restart your phone: fixes 40% of audio issues immediately
  • Remove the case and check the mic grille for dust
  • Disable Bluetooth temporarily: it may be routing to a paired device
  • Try a different app: if WhatsApp works but Zoom doesn't, it's app-specific

App Permissions for Microphone on Android

Settings → Apps → [the app] → Permissions → Microphone → Allow. Note that "Allow only while using the app" is fine for most apps but causes issues for some recording apps that run in the background.

Android 12+ shows a dot in the status bar whenever an app uses the mic. If the dot doesn't appear when you start recording, the permission is blocked.

Verify the hardware works by testing it in a different app: your browser:

If the mic works in our online tester but not in your other apps, the issue is app-specific (re-grant permissions or reinstall). If it doesn't work in any app, the issue is system-wide.

Clear Cache for Phone and Microphone Apps

Sometimes app caches get corrupted and cause weird audio issues. Settings → Apps → [the app] → Storage → Clear Cache. This doesn't delete data: just temporary files. Try the app again.

For phone-call mic issues specifically, also clear cache for the Phone app and the Carrier app (e.g., Verizon, T-Mobile).

Safe Mode Test (Rules Out Third-Party App Conflicts)

Boot into Safe Mode (varies by manufacturer: usually hold Power, then long-press "Power off" → "Reboot to Safe Mode"). In Safe Mode only system apps run. If the mic works here but not normally, a third-party app is interfering.

Common culprits: audio enhancement apps, screen recorders, voice assistants other than the default. Uninstall recently-added apps one by one.

Hardware Test and Factory Reset Considerations

If nothing software-related fixes the issue, factory reset is the last resort before paid repair. Back up your data first (Google account sync handles most of it). Settings → System → Reset → Factory data reset.

After reset, test the mic before reinstalling apps. If it works clean but breaks after installing an app, you've identified the culprit. If it doesn't work even after factory reset, it's hardware: book a repair.
