Quick Checks (Screen Protector, Dirty Screen, Gloves)
Clean the screen with a microfiber cloth. Oil, sweat, and fingerprints interfere with capacitive touch. Remove any case or screen protector and test bare: cheap protectors with peeling adhesive cause ghost touches and dead zones.
Make sure your hands are dry and bare. Most touchscreens don't register through gloves (except special "touchscreen gloves" with conductive fingertips).

Dead Zones vs Full Screen Not Responding
Dead zones (specific areas don't register): usually a damaged digitizer. Often caused by drops, pressure damage, or water exposure. Sometimes from a thick screen protector.
Full screen unresponsive: usually a software issue. Force-restart your device first (varies by model: iPhone: volume up, volume down, hold side button; Android: hold power for 10 seconds).
Software Fixes: Restart, Safe Mode, OS Update
Restart the device: fixes the majority of unresponsive-touch issues. If touch is completely dead, hold the power button until forced restart triggers.
On Android, boot into Safe Mode (hold power → long-press "Power off" → Safe Mode). If touch works in Safe Mode but not normally, a third-party app is causing the issue.
Install pending OS updates. Touch driver bugs are fixed in OS updates regularly.
Multi-Touch Test to Find Specific Issues
Multi-touch problems are different from single-touch dead zones. If single touches register but pinch-zoom and rotation gestures don't work, your multi-touch capability is reduced.

Modern phones support 5-10 simultaneous touches. If your phone only registers 1-2, the digitizer is partially damaged.
When It's Hardware (Digitizer Replacement)
If software fixes don't help and our tester shows clear dead zones or reduced touch count, you need a digitizer replacement. On modern phones the digitizer is fused to the display assembly: typically a $100-300 repair.
For laptops, touchscreen replacements are often costlier than the laptop's residual value. Consider whether external mouse and keyboard are an acceptable workaround.
After repair, run the multi-touch test immediately. Cheap aftermarket digitizers often have reduced touch-point capability: discover this within the repair warranty period, not months later.
