How to Tune a Bass Guitar Online

Standard 4-string bass tuning is E1, A1, D2, G2: the same pitches as a guitar's bottom 4 strings, one octave lower. The lowest E string vibrates at just 41.2 Hz; many laptop microphones struggle below 100 Hz, so plugging the bass into an audio interface is ideal. If using a mic, place it close to your speaker cab if amped. Pluck firmly with your fingertip for a clean fundamental.

5-String Bass Tuning

5-string basses add a low B at 30.87 Hz: below the audible range of many speakers and mics. The tuner can still detect it if the input is loud enough, but you may need to listen carefully and watch the needle rather than relying on the audible reference. Some 5-string players prefer a high C instead of low B, tuning EADGC. Use our chromatic tuner for that configuration.

Drop D Bass

Drop D bass (DADG) lowers the low E to D. Common in metal, hard rock, and some pop. Fast switching between standard and Drop D is one reason many bassists keep a hipshot detuner on their lowest string.

Why Is My Bass Hard to Tune?

Three common issues: (1) the mic can't pick up the low fundamentals: use an interface or get closer to the speaker. (2) Strings aren't stretched in: new bass strings stretch for hours. (3) Intonation is off: open tune sounds fine but fretted notes don't. For intonation: adjust the saddle position on each string until the 12th fret harmonic matches the 12th fret fretted note.

Bass Setup and Restringing Tips

Change strings one at a time to maintain neck tension. Wind only 2-3 turns around the post. Stretch each new string by pulling gently away from the body before tuning to pitch. After a full restring, retune all four strings several times over the first hour of play.
